THE NEW NOVEL FROM THE PULITZER PRIZE-WINNING AUTHOR OF DEMON COPPERHEAD · Indian subcontinent edition
A song without any answer in it? That's the sound of waiting.
Livia Bohusz misses her brother, Cyrus. Unmoored by his death and by the suffocating silence of the family farm, eleven-year-old Livia has no choice but to survive. Her only refuge is music — the quiet rapture of piano practice, and the dizzying promise of another life that her talent seems to offer.
So when she arrives at college on a music scholarship, it feels as though a new life might finally begin. She throws herself into her passions in a world where she excels, even while she struggles to fit in among more polished classmates, and glimpses what life might hold beyond the farm and her parents. Then one spring, as the grass revives and the songbirds return, she notices a man with his shirtsleeves rolled to the elbow and asks herself who he is. It is a question she may come to wish she had never asked.
Both a coming-of-age story and a reckoning with midlife hopes and regrets, Partita is a novel about love, longing, class and ambition, as touching, complex and finely tuned as the music it celebrates.
