Oliver Twist
Out of stock
“Please, sir, I want some more.” Dickens's second novel — and the book that put the Victorian workhouse on trial.
Born in a workhouse and orphaned at birth, Oliver Twist is starved, sold and beaten through a childhood of parish charity before running away to London — where he falls in with the Artful Dodger and is taken into Fagin's school for young thieves. Between the brutal Bill Sikes, the doomed loyalty of Nancy, and the kindness of Mr Brownlow, Oliver's fate is fought over by a city that has already decided what a boy like him is worth.
Furious, funny and unbearably suspenseful by turns, Oliver Twist gave English the Dodger and Fagin and made child poverty impossible to ignore. It remains the most readable of Dickens's early novels — and one of the great London books.
