Rachel Cusk · Faber · Paperback
M is a film star, and one of the most recognisable faces of our time.
Fame has given her life the look of total freedom. People rush to oblige her, rooms are rearranged around her, schedules bend to suit her. For M, the ordinary rules of reality seem to have dissolved.
Now she has agreed to let a stranger write her biography. Their project spills outward — to the olive groves and holiday beaches where M passes her days, through hotel rooms, grand bourgeois houses and film sets, across one modern city after another. Beside M it is hard not to feel plain, hard not to feel small. Yet what might this closeness let the writer glimpse about the very experience of being alive? And what will M make of the finished work?
With Life of M, Rachel Cusk once again invents a new kind of literature: a novel stripped of artifice that takes our emptiness and fills it with grace.
