What has India's much-talked-about post-liberalization growth actually done beyond the big metros? Shinjini Kumar went to find out. Travelling across thirty cities of Middle India and interviewing more than 300 women (and a few men), she met the people building that growth on the ground — running everything from small cafés to business empires, in places most of us don't think to look.
Their stories are full of ambition and grit, and also of a particular kind of humour: the humour of women who have spent their whole working lives fielding the same weary question from family, neighbours and officials — kya zaroorat hai? Why do you even need to?
Bringing together the economic story with the human one, Busy Women is a warm, witty and insightful portrait of women reshaping India's commercial and cultural heartland, and a must-read for anyone trying to understand how the country is changing. Rajiv Bajaj calls it a sharp, fast-paced, original tale of women transforming Middle India; Neena Gupta says it celebrates India's new heroines.
